The intercostal muscles are located between the ribs. They are also important
in generating breathing movements of the chest, because when they contract
the ribcage moves upwards and outwards. This increases volume of the
thoracic cavity enclosed by the ribcage and diaphragm and decreases the
lung pressure so atmospheric air enters.
